CELLULITE REDUCTION

WHAT CAUSES CELLULITE?

The skin is connected to the underlying muscle by fibrous bands made of collagen (called 'septae'). Over time, these bands harden and contract, and pull down the skin causing puckering and dimpling. The contraction also creates a blockage of the blood vessels and lymphatics leading to trapped fluids and swollen looking skin.

When fat cells become over-inflated they worsen the look of cellulite by pushing up between the septae causing further bulging and lumpiness. The problem is compounded by the aging process as skin becomes thinner and collagen breaks down and loses ability to hold the fat cells neatly in place. Treatments for cellulite need to address both the fat cells and collagen structure in order to have good results.

The belief that cellulite is a sign of obesity is a myth: In reality, more than 80% of women over the age of 20, regardless of their weight or size, are affected by cellulite. Even very young and very thin women are affected. Poor diet, slow metabolism, hormone changes, the pill, genetics and even dehydration may play a part in whether or not you have cellulite.

Female hormones (estrogen, and to a lesser extent, progesterone) play important roles in the formation of cellulite. Estrogen hormone stimulates the storage of fat, which is needed for menstruation, pregnancy, and lactation. In addition, during the later phases of pregnancy, estrogen also causes the breakdown of collagen fibers to relax the cervix, making it possible for a woman to deliver her baby. The process, however, isn't exclusive to the birthing period — it continues through a woman's lifetime, weakening the skin's structure. This collagen breakdown sets the stage for the formation of cellulite. Progesterone may also contribute to the cellulite problem by weakening veins and causing water retention and weight gain.

VELASHAPE TECHNOLOGY

Patented elōs (Electro-Optical Synergy) technology, as featured in VelaShape™, is the first and only system that simultaneously harnesses the power of bi-polar radio frequency (RF) and optical energy. This technology was developed by the Intense Pulse Light inventor, Dr. Shimon Eckhouse and physicist, Dr. Michael Kreindel. Radio frequency is a highly controllable energy heat source that works synergistically with optical energy. The combination of infrared and conducted RF energies precisely heat the target treatment area, and the mechanical massage and suction enhance the treatment to ensure optimal results.

WHAT RESULTS CAN I EXPECT?

Visible changes are often noticeable as soon as 1 or 2 weeks after the first session. There is usually visible and measurable contouring of the lumps and bumps of the skin as evidenced by post-treatment photos, girth measurements, and what most patients love the most… how their favorite pair of pants seem to fit much better! Men seem to respond very well to our treatments for contouring of torso, love handles and abdominal areas. You will most likely notice an improvement in your skin tone. The appearance of stretch marks and loose skin may also be improved.
